Ballpark

screenshot of ballpark applicationDeveloped by Adriaan Tijsseling, Ballpark is a small Mac OS X app that loads Yahoo’s MLB GameChannel information into a separate window which can float over others, or become part of the desktop background.

By sticking it into the background, you can use Exposé to quickly hide all your open windows and reveal the gamechannel information. I just see that the Cubs are down by a run to the Diamondbacks… oh wait it just updated… make that down by 4 in the top of the 3rd… Darn…

Tijsseling is also the developer of the great desktop blogging client, Ecto.

My Guestmap - Google Maps Mashup

MyGuestmap allows your visitors to add pins to a map, showing where they are and leaving a message. Kind of like the old guest-books from the early days of the web…

The administrative interface allows you to control map width and height, zoom level, and also set the latitude and longitude of where your map is centered. I centered mine on the latitude and longitude of my school.

I like the idea of tagging locations on a map. Could think of lots of ways that we could use this at school. Having student research the local neighborhood history and then use a map such as this to tag the locations. MyGuestmap allows for the inclusion of a message and a URL link. Students could write about neighborhood landmarks and then point to them using this tool…

To see what one looks like, follow this link and leave a message…

Podcast Enhancer

I sat down last week and printed out this article from Make, and walked through the steps of making an enhanced podcast. Of course I could of saved myself a bit of time if i had just gone to the end of the article where the author points to some tools to help with this process. I tried Gijs van den Heuvel’s Podcast Enhancer and found it very easy to use.

PodCastEnhancer is an Apple Script which makes it easy to author Enhanced PodCasts. As MacScripter points out…

You need OS X 10.3.8 or better (including iPhoto, Safari and iTunes 4.9.) to use PodCastEnhancer, as well Apple’s ChapterTool, which is a free download from the iTunes Music Store. Make a new project folder in the same folder where ChapterTool resides. Put your .m4a (AAC) audiofile in the project folder. PodCastEnhancer will use your audio file to make the enhanced PodCast! Version 0.3 adda a chapter summary for the first chapter and correctly encodes special XML Characters in HyperLinks.

A very good tool if you are looking to play around with enhanced podcasts on the Apple platform…

Using a Weblog to Facilitate Paper Publishing

classroom notes pdf Screenshot 03-2

At Lewis Elementary School we are using a weblog to publish a weekly publication we call Classroom Notes. The idea is to utilize the weblog interface to make it relatively easy for teachers to publish timely information about their classrooms. By using weblog software, we also provide our teachers with an easy web presence. Note: At Lewis we are using Moveable Type to publish our newsletter, but this should work with any weblog software that allows for multiple authors…

Here’s how it works. Each Monday during the school year, I provide teachers with 20 minutes during our staff meeting time, where they can write their weekly post. These posts deal with things such as upcoming field trips, curriculum updates and announcements. The idea is to provide families with 2 - 3 paragraphs of information each week. We created a multi-author weblog called Classroom Notes. We also edited the basic index.html page so that the most recent post by each teacher is displayed on that page. For example, if you were to visit the Classroom Notes page now, you would see that the most recent post by our kindergarten teacher is listed at the top, followed other posts in grade level order down the web page. In addition we use the category feature of Moveable Type to create separate category pages which in effect are individual teacher pages containing a chronological archive of all that particular teacher’s posts.

While many in our school community utilize the web, not all of our families have access to this information, so in addition the web site, each Wednesday we “harvest” the most recent entries and publish them each week in a two sided newsletter. This goes home in addition to a more general school newsletter each week. The way this works is that on Tuesday afternoon myself or our school secretary will copy the most recent posts from the Classroom Notes page and paste them into a Microsoft Word template, which we then format and if space allows add a few pictures and then print for distribution on Wednesday.

The feedback from our community has been very positive. Many parents often wonder about the curriculum and activities of upcoming grade levels and our Classroom Notes provides them with a weekly window into the work taking place in all of our classroom.

Note: One feature I plan to add for the next school year is to incorporate a Moveable Type plug-in called Workflow that will allow teachers to post their weekly news, but the news won’t go live to the web site until it has been edited by myself of another designated editor.

Another Google Maps Pedometer Tool…

Screenshot 01-1Walk Jog Run Routes Grab your Running Shoes!

A running route planner and a distance speed calculator that hooks into Google Maps. Has some interesting features including the ability to save and share routes, email them too! Click on any of the markers for your route and see how far this point is from the start and what the estimated time would be for a given speed. There are already three saved routes up for Portland including my run from Sunday…

Would be nice it they allowed for tagging of maps. Things like hilly, flat, vicious dogs and such…

Bus Schedule Widget: TriMet Transit Tracker Widget

Trimet widget

TriMet Transit Tracker Widget:

Portland is blessed with a very good public transportation system called TriMet. My school, Lewis Elementary is served by the #75 bus. There is a stop right at the end of our parking lot. Several of our students, parents and staff take the bus to and from school and we have found the Tri-Met Transit Tracker to be a great tool, especially when it is raining and one would like to avoid standing in the rain as long as possible.

The Transit Tracker uses Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to track how far a bus is from a particular stop. Every TriMet bus is equipped with a transmitter that allows continuous satellite tracking with an accuracy of about 30 feet. This information can easily be pulled up from their web site, (or sent to a cell phone) and as a matter of fact it is bookmarked on the image we use on our iMacs.

I recently discovered a Dashboard Widget that will display arrival information for a particular stop. In an earlier post, I discussed how we use an LCD, powered by a Mac, as a reader board in our main hallway, and a program called TickerShock to display a school events RSS feed along the screen bottom. We plan to add the Transit Ticker Widget (We’ll run two copies of the widget, one for northbound, one for southbound…) to the display so that the bus arrival information will also be displayed for students, parents and staff.

I thought I’d grab some art work images from Lewis and create a little Bubbleshare gallery so I can play a bit more with the zoom feature…
