In Search of the Characters of New York:
TypeCon is a yearly gathering of typographers and font enthusiasts. Participants spent the last week in New York discussing typography, attending sessions, and taking part in Typography Tours.
Darn, I missed this by a week…
Love the name of the organizing group… The Society of Typographic Aficionados

Reading Jon Udell’s weblog, I always find something interesting. Many of the tools Jon has created and technologies he discusses have applications in the education world. His Library Lookup Bookmarklet is a great tool for educators. We utilize this tool at Lewis Elementary to help students, teachers and parents find books of interest at our local library.
Recently Jon has been experimenting with creating custom podcast feeds(1) using the social bookmarking tool, del.icio.us. In this entry, Jon notes that del.icio.us has the ability to create RSS 2.0 feeds with enclosures. This is pretty interesting. If you use del.icio.us to tag media items such as .mp3 or .mov files (a complete list of file types, and more information about rich media and del.icio.us can be found here… ), del.icio.us will identify that type of file and then create a special RSS feed with enclosures that one could then drop into a tool such as iTunes or iPodder to create a specialized audio feed, a customized podcast playlist.
For example I went out today and found 3 recent education related podcasts. Tim Wilson recently posted an interview with David Baugh of DV in Education. I went to Tim’s website, navigated to the podcast entry, then once at the entry clicked through to the .mp3 file. Once the file started playing in my browser, I bookmarked it with del.icio.us. I gave the entry the tag educast. I proceeded to do this with the other sites. Since the files ended in a .mp3, del.icio.us added them to a unique RSS feed. If you are interested in subscribing to this feed you can point iTunes or iPodder to
http://del.icio.us/rss/timlauer/system:media:mp3+educast
If others were to use the tag, educast to tag educational related podcasts, one could subscribe to that feed using this URL:
http://del.icio.us/rss/tag/system:filetype:mp3+educast
1. Actually Jon is doing a lot more than just just creating the podcast feeds, he is also using text to speech technology to create audio introductions to the podcast clips he is pointing to. You can read more about that here.

Amassing a Treasury of Photography - New York Times:
The New York Times reports on a project by the George Eastman House and the International Center of Photography to be completed in the fall of 2006 that will be largest freely accessible databases of masterwork photography anywhere on the Web. A prototype site is up at Photomuse.org.
The creators say the goal is to organize the site so that works can be found not only by the name of the photographer but also in many other ways. For example, a Hine picture of an Italian immigrant couple could be found under the headings of “immigration,” or “Italian-Americans” or “Ellis Island” or “urban photography” or under the headings of exhibitions where the photograph has been shown through the years.
Sounds a bit like tagging. Would be interesting if they built ino their web tool the ability for users to tag images or at least take advantage of tags on places such as Technorati. Would be interesting to do things like Flickr Related Tag Browser with the images from the archive, or other such archives.
If you haven’t seen the Flickr Related Tag Browser , it allows you to search for images on Flickr with a specific tag. The results are returned and displayed and related tags are aligned in a circle around display. Click on a related tag to see images associated with that tag. Another cool web application from the folks at Airtight Interactive, creators of such things as the Flickr PostCard Viewer.

Google Moon - Lunar Landing Sites:
In honor of the first manned Moon landing, which took place on July 20, 1969, Google has created Google Moon… Be sure to zoom in all the way… Also follow the More About Google Moon to learn about the localized version of Google Moon that will come online in 2069…

Over at cogdogblog, Alan Levine points to Mastercards with flickr. Basically the old game of concentration using images from Flickr. Type in a tag and up comes a grid of images. Click on the question marks to reveal an image. Maybe I’ll upload images of my staff to Flickr so our students can play Lewis Elementary Staff concentration…
