Viewing Art Work Like a Google Map…

Screenshot 01-29In another example of how the Google Maps interface is influencing web design, John Johnston, of Sandaig School in Glasgow, has created an interesting Flash based interface to view examples of student art. The art pieces are large wall sized murals and you can navigate and zoom in around the art work similar to moving around on a Google Map. A very nice way to view the piece. We have a very large mural at Lewis Elementary, and I’ll have to ask John to help me do something similar…

I’d be delighted to help if I can. I am playing with a variation that loads any local jpg, see:

    and would welcome any input.

Very interesting I really like this. This would be great for letting kids look at art by the masters to get up close looks of the detail…

THe part that throws me off a little is the connection to Google. What makes Google maps different is that they deal with unlimited boundaries (or at least large limits) and load quickly.

For an object like this painting, you could do this with a scan of it into Adobe Acrobat (or I’m sure of already existing tools that do scroll and zoom).

    Hey Gary,
I guess I’m thinking more about the click and grab and zoom in a web browser rather than in a stand alone application. As you note, lots of tools can do this.
