Barcelona airport strike strands 10,000 Britons - Times Online

The strike was sparked by the decision by Spanish airports authority AENA not to renew Iberia’s baggage handling contract.
Workers blocked one of the airport’s three runways this morning to protest at possible job losses.

Andy Carvin has set up a site - DOPA Watch - that automatically aggregates the latest news and blog posts about the DOPA (interesting acronym) legislation. The site also incorporates legislative updates from GovTrack.us. It will be interesting to see if the owners of the types of sites targeted by the legislation will begin to lobby Congress to counter some of the perceptions inherent in the legislation.

A few months back I wrote about Gizmo, a voice over Internet service that has many nice features including the ability to record phone conversations (great for student interviews and such…) and to connect to conference calls. They have now added a feature which allows Gizmo users to call the land lines and mobile numbers of other Gizmo members free of charge. Basically calls from your computer to any phone owned by a Gizmo user in 60 countries are free. (Currently Skype is offering this only to calls within the US and Canada, and only until the end of this year…) While this can be seen as a marketing move by the company, the result is that with a bit of organization and effort you can make voice calls to 60 countries for free. This has come in handy during our trip to Spain. Now I will need to talk to the IT guys about opening up the port for use in my school…

Google Video has a nice feature that allows you to link to a specific section of video stored on their system. For example the links below are to a video clip I posted a few weeks ago. By appending #0m36s to the video URL I can jump right to the section that begins 36 seconds from the start. I haven’t been able to figure out if you can configure the URL so that a clip begins at a certain time and ends at a certain time.

Oregon Public Broadcasting has a report about the build out of Portland’s citywide wireless Internet grid. (Dailywireless also has a report with a few more details.)
Starting later this year in the downtown and inner southeast sections of Portland, and later throughout the city, residents will be able to pick up an advertising based connection free of charge. Advertisement free service will cost $20 a month. The builders of the system indicate that when finished, 95% of the city will be covered. The bandwidth is expect to be 1 Mbps. In addition to providing access to residents, the city will use the system to connect to devices such as traffic beacons, parking meters, and other such city infrastructure that can take advantage of a wireless network connection.
It will be interesting to see how the local school systems interact with this system (According to the RFP, Portland Public Schools is a partner with the city…)

Jon Udell has posted a podcast of his conversation with Mike Hudack of blip.tv, a free videoblogging, podcasting and video sharing service. They talk about the many features of blip including hooks into other tagging and sharing engines like Flickr, del.icio.us and Furl, and the ability to post video not only to blip.tv, but also to the Internet Archive. They also discuss Udell’s recent post about “walled gardens“, and some of the features of blip that allow users to make their work more transparent and not only tied to blip’s site.
